China’s Big Tech Firms Are Axing Thousands of Workers

China’s biggest tech companies are conducting large-scale layoffs this year as they deal with an economic slowdown and Beijing’s regulatory pressure.

Tencent, operator of the popular chat, social media and payments app WeChat, is planning to cut thousands of employees in some of its biggest business units this year, including around a fifth of the staff at its cloud unit.

E-commerce giant Alibaba has started layoffs that could hit at least thousands throughout the year, including at one of its grocery apps. Ride-hailing app operator Didi is also axing around 2,000 employees from units including its core service.

While Chinese internet companies regularly let go of underperforming employees, much of the current round of layoffs is linked to either China’s regulatory clampdown over the past year or the economic slowdown.

The cuts are a part of the companies’ efforts to restructure businesses that are less profitable and bloated, and to improve overall profitability, a business term known in Chinese as “trim the fat and grow the lean”.

Companies are also offering fewer opportunities for employees to change positions internally than in past years, as various units are cutting back on staff members.

中国科技巨头裁员数千人为应对经济放缓和政府的监管压力，中国的科技巨头们今年正进行大规模裁员。微信是集聊天、社交媒体和支付于一体的热门应用，其运营商腾讯计划今年在几个最大的业务部门裁员数千人，其中包括云部门约五分之一的员工。电商巨头阿里巴巴已开始裁员，全年裁员人数可能至少达到数千人，其中包括旗下一款食品购物应用。打车应用滴滴也将裁员约2000名员工，包括其核心服务部门。尽管中国互联网公司经常解雇表现不佳的员工，但本轮裁员大多与中国过去一年的监管整顿或经济放缓有关。这些公司正在努力重组利润较低和臃肿的业务并提高整体盈利能力，这次的裁员就是该计划的一部分。在中文里，这个行为对应的商业术语叫做「去肥增瘦」。与过去几年相比，公司为员工提供的内部转岗的机会也减少了，因为各个部门都在削减员工人数。

词汇积累

1. axe vt. 解雇、开除

在中文里，不管是「裁剪」还是「裁纸」，「裁」这个动作的本意往往都和剪子、刀子相关。而类似「裁员」、「裁减」这样的表达则是「裁」的引申用法。文章标题里出现的axe，恰好可以结合「裁」这个中文字来记忆。

一来，axe的原意是「斧子」，和执行「裁剪」这个动作的剪子、刀子类似，它们都是工具；另外，axe也派生出了类似「精简、减少」的含义，既可以指「削减开支」，也可以指「裁员」。

比如，标题里的axe thousands of workers就是「裁掉上千位员工」，或者axe public spending就是「减少公共支出」。

此外，axe的名词含义也有「解雇」的含义，face the axe就是「面临解雇」、get the axe就是「被解雇」，不过这个名词用法属于非正式表达。

另外需要注意axe的拼写，它有两种不同的拼写方式，英式英语写作axe，美式英语除了前者，也可以写作ax。

2. layoff n. 裁员

在《欧美的院线寒冬》一文中见过的表达。

值得注意的是，类似这类「动词+介词」组成的名词，往往拆开来就是一个含义相关的动词词组（比如liftoff和lift off、outburst和burst out，分别点击这里和这里回顾）。因此，把layoff拆开后，我们就有了lay sb. off「解雇某人」这个动词短语。

回到原文，形容词large-scale表示「大规模的」（也有反义词small-scale），第一段第一句中出现的conduct large-scale layoffs自然就是「进行了大规模裁员」，也是相当地道的表达。

3. cut vt. 削减、缩减

cut的这个含义与前面出现的axe类似，同样既可以表达「裁员」，也可以表示「减少开支」。试举两例：

1. The company decides to cut the employees because the economy is not doing well.

由于经济不景气，公司决定裁员。

2. The first priority is to cut costs.

当务之急是降低成本。

4. let go of sb. 放某人走

迪士尼电影《冰雪奇缘》的名曲Let It Go「随它吧」曾经家喻户晓，无形中也让let it go这个英语常用短语成了大家的口头禅。

文中出现的let go of sb.和let it go取得是同一个意思，后者直译是「放它走」，前者则是「放某人走」。

在职场语境下，其实就是「裁员」的委婉表达。相较于直白的dismiss「解雇」和言辞激烈的fire/sack「炒鱿鱼」，let go of sb.就有种中文里「优化员工」的意味。

let go of后面的underperforming employees也可以留意一下，意思是「表现一般的员工」。其中的underperforming来自动词原形underperform，我们之前多次讲过，前缀under-有「不足」的含义（点击这里回顾），所以underperform就是「表现不理想」。

合起来，let go of underperforming employees就是「裁掉表现不好的员工」。

5. cut back 减少、削减

含义和前文提到的axe和cut类似，不过使用的时候需要注意，cut back与宾语之间，还需要一个介词on，这才有了文中的cut back on staff members「裁减员工」。

和lay off类似，cut back也有对应的名词，只需将cut和back合二为一，即可得到名词cutback「削减」。

除了以上几个文中出现的表达，我们还可以再补（回）充（忆）两个和裁员相关的表达。

6. slash vt. 大幅削减

《素食环保》一文见过的表达（点击这里回顾）。原意是用刀「砍、削」，所以「大幅削减」这个派生含义就不难理解了。配合介词by，slash可以表示裁员的具体人数：

The workforce has been slashed by 1,000.

职工人数裁减了1000人。

7. downsize vt. 缩编

《热桌办公》一文中出现过的表达（点击这里回顾）。

所谓downsize，当然就是size goes down「规模减小」，一个公司的规模变小，那自然就是靠「缩紧编制」来实现的。

反过来，如果把down换成up，那么就有了downsize的反义词upsize「增大规模」。

另外，这两个动词分别对应的名词是downsizing和upsizing。

再补充一个职场相关表达

8. restructure v. 重组、调整结构

即前缀re-「重新」+structure「结构」。不管是政府部门、行业，还是某家具体的公司，只要是一个组织，就都有重组的可能，而且重组一般以提高效率为目标，所以往往伴随人事变动。

因此，原文中的restructure businesses that are less profitable and bloated, and to improve overall profitability就是「重组利润较低和臃肿的业务并提高整体盈利能力」（句子结构分析见下文）。

restructure对应的名词是restructuring，相应的近义词是reorganization，在外企有时也会简称reorg。
