Hi, Im David and Im going to take you through the job interview process for a general labourer.

Im going to ask you some common interview questions and I recommend you pause this interview after each question and think about how youd answer it.

Say your answers out loud to practice what it would be like at a real interview.

You can even record yourself on your phone or webcam to watch it back and see where you can improve.

Ill finish up by giving you some tips on what Id expect to hear from you during a successful interview.

Lets get started.

Share an experience in which youve successfully learned to handle a new piece of equipment.

How do you stay fit in order to perform physical activities that are required in the workplace?

What duties have you enjoyed doing in your previous roles?

What has been the hardest task, why and how did you handle it?

How do you feel about working outside in bad weather?

Where would you like to be in your career five years from now?

What can you do for us that other candidates cant?

Do you have any questions for me?

What would make an interview stand out for a good reason for me would be somebody that had done some research on the company, perhaps looked at the website.

I think that its important for an interviewee to have done some research about the company before an interview to show some interest and just to be well-informed so that they can have some questions.

I mean, Ive spoken to some guys and theyve not even remembered applying for the job.

Ah, you know, they say “ um, where you from again? I applied for so many jobs ”.

Doesnt make you feel so special.

One time, Id forgotten to give this guy the address but he worked it out for himself by going to the website and that showed initiative.

What would make an interviewee stand out for a bad reason would be somebody answering their phone during an interview, not being prepared.

Ah, and I had one guy bring his father in and that was just odd.

When Im asking questions and asking for examples, Im often looking for their productivity rate, if theyre timing themselves to do certain jobs to see whether they have much care factor about what theyre doing and if they care about the time that they do the job in and are they actually, well, is the employer, or the previous employer getting their moneys worth out of them?

I find it interesting when an interviewee asks some questions at the end of an interview and its actually quite rare.

I remember one time we interviewed this, ah, a candidate, and at the end we said Do you have any questions? and he pulled out a list.

That was really unusual but it was very welcoming because it meant he was taking the interview serious.

Perhaps some more tips for a good interview would be to dress appropriately.

Perhaps not overdress.

Were a trade industry so I wouldnt expect a candidate to turn up in a suit and tie but also be prepared, have anything thats going to help their cause -

like if theyve got a drivers license, any certificates they may already have, anything thats going to make them look a little more professional.

Its interesting when you get the start dates with a candidate.

If the candidates currently employed, I always think when I ask them how soon they can start, Im looking to see are they willing to burn the bridge with the previous employer and that could be me one day and a lot of them will say I want to do the right thing by my employer, and I respect that.

Another tip would be to make sure that youre the suitable candidate for the job thats been advertised.

Well always advertise for a licensed electrician and well find that the inappropriate people are applying.

Theyre either unlicensed because theyre from a different territory or country or state and it simply cant work.
